“Akakuma,” a dragon fruit shaved-ice treat

It’s not summer in Kagoshima without the frozen, milky shaved-ice treat “Shirokuma.” However, at Amami-no-sato, “Akakuma,” a variation using dragon fruit from the restaurant’s own farm, is a hit. The texture and tartness of the dragon fruit combines with the sweet vanilla ice cream for a heavenly match. (Normally only available from July to October)
